Food Technology
Key Stage 3
At MECA, all ingredients are provided for students. In return, they are expected to follow the health and safety rules within the kitchen. The preparation and clearing up process is equally as important as the cooking itself.
In the classroom, there are a range of food related books to encourage extra reading and research.
All Key Stage 3 pupils will access Food Technology lessons. The sessions allow students to learn how to work safely in the kitchen and prepare a range of dishes. Pupils will get the chance to use a range of kitchen equipment and ingredients. The curriculum refers to the Eatwell Guide, National Curriculum and the importance of a healthy and balanced diet.
There is an emphasis on gaining practical experience at this stage. Topics throughout the year include:

The aim is to give students the opportunity to cook new recipes with some new and perhaps unfamiliar ingredients as well as develop a range of skills to support independence.
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4 pupils work towards a WJEC Level 1/2 Vocational Award in Hospitality and Catering. This course has been designed to support students who want to learn about this vocational sector and the potential it can offer them for their careers or further study.
The course comprises of two mandatory units:

Unit 1:The Hospitality and Catering Industry – this is an external written examination worth 40% of the qualification.

Unit 2:Hospitality and Catering in Action - this is an internal controlled assessment worth 60% of the qualification.
